Creating a lively language learning environment for young learners of French, and offering a popular alternative to more traditional, teacher-led***information about France*** lessons. Children can develop their knowledge of the francophone world - and through guided whole-group discussion - their home / host country too, in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, in part independently of the teacher. There is a bonus multi-focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing and spelling, and is a great way of aligning language learning with developing literacy skills in English. The resource comprises the following non-editable files: 20 facts cards - there are four facts in each of the following topic groups:arts & culture, country, famous people, language and history. There are blank templates for children to research and create their own facts cards for each other, and providing them with opportunity to apply learning and knowledge creatively. Over the school year, children should regularly add to their facts cards, which in time creates a fabulous bank of facts about France. Facts recording sheet challenge level 1 - there are two options: either two or four fact recording boxes per page. Children read their selected facts, and copy the information in the boxes. Facts recording sheet challenge level 2 - there are also two options: two or four fact recording boxes in this challenge level. However, there is a more open-ended task: responding to the question “What did you learn?”. This requires children to read their fact card, process the information, and then recreate it in their own words, describing the fact in the context of what they have learned. 24 question / comprehension cards — the questions have a differentiated range of challenge, and are based on the knowledge developed through the whole-group presentation and discussion, and the facts cards. There are some independent research questions, which I use as a springboard for further discussion based on children’s own developing interests about France. There are blank templates here too - creating questions is a great way to think about and apply knowledge and learning. question / comprehension cards recording sheet whole-group facts presentation & discussion MERCI BEACOUP ET BON VOYAGE !

This set features ten differentiated word searches, focusing on a wide range of German Christmas vocabulary, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. The searches offer a really useful learning opportunity - enabling learners to engage with German Christmas vocabulary, which is a great springboard for discussion on Christmas traditions and practices in Germany and other German-speaking countries, comparing them to other traditions and practices students know, but also working on reading, writing, spelling and German language skills in general. Students are able to identify which direction words are located in within the grid by referring to the arrow key. There are also five grid templates for learners to create their own searches for each other - this is a really popular activity, and I’ve found that my learners often like to create grids for family at home too. The templates enable learners to apply their language practically and creatively, which is really important at this stage of German language development. There is an answer key for each word search, so that students can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. There are 50 German Christmas-themed wordss across the word searches - it’s not necessary for students to learn all the words explicitly - over time, they tend to become familiar with all of them anyway. Looking for unfamiliar words in the grids really works well for implicit learning. There’s a full alphabetical German Christmas vocabulary list, which is a great long-term German Christmas vocabulary reference resource, which my students like to add to when they can. It may not be copied, rewritten, amended, shared or distributed outside your own classroom, in whole or in part, in any way. The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use. 62 posters / flashcards featuring 21 Spanish-speaking countries and 10 Portuguese-speaking countries with the countries, capital cities and flags, in Spanish. I’ve found having the posters in my classroom provides an instant introduction to the scope of the Spanish-speaking world, and seeing the countries where Portuguese, rather than Spanish, is spoken, prevents them confusing the two from the very beginning of their learning - my students do often tend to get them a little mixed up! The posters are great for reading, speaking and pronunciation prompts too. I often ask quick questions such as ¿Cuál es la capital de…?, ¿Sí o no? Madrid es la capital de Paraguay? or ¿Se habla español o portugués en Brasil? - there are lots of questioning and speaking opportunities, using the posters as visual prompts. Speaking does tend to be quite a challenging skill, particularly for beginner language learners, so getting the most from classroom decor to encourage students to speak is really important. This works particularly with my beginner Spanish classes, as it’s a great way of encouraging them to speak, and to construct sentences, from the very beginning of their Spanish program. I’ve often found that there can be several (or more!) countries that students don’t actually know, or have never heard of, and the posters are really useful for helping them develop their general understanding and knowledge of the wider world. There are two backgrounds to choose from: Spanish flag or plain. Laminate them if you can, as they hang really well, are easier to manipulate as flashcards, and definitely last in great condition for years. I’ve also uploaded a set of posters which focus solely on Spanish-speaking countries - have a look here ($3.75): SPANISH-SPEAKING COUNTRIES POSTERS FLASHCARDS https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/spanish-speaking-countries-posters-flashcards-12921898 Have a browse in my store for more Spanish-speaking countries resources, with a wide range of other Spanish teaching and learning resources, with Spanish dollar deals, special offer bundles and lots of freebies. ¡MUCHAS GRACIAS Y BUEN VIAJE!

The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use. An instant introduction to 25 vegetables in French. I like to share essential beginner French vocabulary that I can use in everyday talk with my young learners from the beginning of their French learning program. The key focus is on the definite article, both masculine and feminine, singular and plural, though I do use the set to start to compare these with the indefinite article, which I’ve found to be a really successful way of helping students embed grammatical concepts such as gender, implicitly, without the need for repeated explicit instruction. We use the set not only when we’re introducing and practicing French vegetables, but also for developing French language skills and awareness in general. Students are able to familiarise themselves with how French words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. I don’t actually introduce 25 vegetables at once, but in my classroom decor, I generally have additional language to maximise students’ exposure to related vocabulary. The vegetables are: artichoke; asparagus; beetroot; broccoli; cabbage; carrots; cauliflower; celery; corn; cucumber; eggplants / aubergines; French / green beans; garlic; leeks; lettuce; mushrooms; onions; peas ; red peppers; yellow pepper; potatoes; sprouts; spinach; sweet potatoes; tomato The flashcards / posters are 8.5 x 11 (A4) portrait size. There are two design formats to choose from - French flag, or plain without frame, to keep prep costs to a minimum, so 50 flashcards / posters in total. I always print on card stock and / or laminate my flashcards / posters, as they display much more effectively, and remain in excellent condition for years. Please read the Terms of Use carefully. These French animals display posters / flashcards create a fabulous French look and feel in the learning environment. I’ve found that this also helps promote French as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner learners of French. They introduce learners to a range of animals in French from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with how French words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. Students definitely notice the different words for a/an, and ask why some animals are un, and others are une. I’ve used this as a useful prompt to introduce the concept of gender. There are 20 animals using the masculine and feminine indefinite article, which is a great opportunity to begin to compare French to English. I’ve chosen a couple of insects and birds, as well as animals that feature in very popular stories, such as ours and loup. Looking at language, and the ways it works, either similarly to, or differently from their first language, helps learners become implicitly aware of linguistic concepts in both languages, which I’ve found to be really useful for both current and later learning. The animals are: a bear : a bee : a bird : a butterfly : a cat : a dog : a fish : a fox : a frog : a horse : a kangaroo : a monkey : a mouse : an owl : a parrot : a rabbit : a spider : a squirrel : a turtle / a tortoise : a wolf Use them as flashcards to introduce and practice language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating. There are three sets of 20 9.5x11 (A4) portrait posters, each with a different background for you to choose from: French flag, animal footprint or black wave. MERCI BEAUCOUP ET BON APPRENTISAGE !

These French Christmas Numbers 0-31 challenge cards are perfect for French Christmas lessons, and really do help to create a lively language learning environment. I’ve found that lessons around the Christmas period are a great time for revisiting and practising language and structures we’ve looked at over the semester. The questions are entirely in***French***, and students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their developing knowledge of French in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling in French in general, and certainly in French numbers and French Christmas vocabulary in particular. The questions range in complexity and challenge, not only in terms of calculation, but also in terms of the level of French - they are definitely aimed at advanced beginner French learners, rather than new or recent beginners. Most learners will be able to infer meaning from context / images, which have a real French Christmas theme, such as la bûche de Noël and Père Fouettard, with vocabulary and structures repeated throughout, giving learners a chance to familiarize themselves really well with them. Nonetheless, it can be useful to read through the questions with the whole class first to check everyone is able to access the language, and therefore the activity, successfully. Students really do benefit in terms of language learning if they have several opportunities to work with the cards, rather than simply working with them in a single lesson. I always include additional vocabulary to add a little challenge, and to encourage students to think a little more creatively and independently. There’s an alphabetical German-English and English-German fruits and vegetables lists with masculine and feminine fruits, definite and indefinite article, and singular and plural . This really helps students familiarize themselves with grammatical concepts without explicit instruction. There are some translation questions too - both from German to English and English to German, which is a great introduction to translation for beginner learners. I explain that there are several possible correct alternatives, as translation is not a word-for-word activity, which is definitely useful for them to know from the very beginning of their learning. The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and grammatical concepts creatively and practically too. The bundle consists of 3 individual sets of task cards, each containing the following: Set of 36 question cards 2-page answer recording sheet 2-page answer key alphabetical fruits & vegetables lists, German-English & English-German Have a browse in my store for more German task cards, and more German resources including German dollar deals, special offer bundles, and lots of freebies - I’ve added a couple here for you to try. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too - particularly with silent s, the audible sound of x (deux and dix for example) and so on. I point out particular phonemes and sounds too, such as***ei in groseilles*** and the soft c in citrons . The aim of the game is to create a French sentence chain as quickly as possible. The game works well if the sentence sequence is placed on the floor, a longish table, or other flat surface. The design is four cards per page, which allows for a large font - this is really important for beginner language learners who are familiar with the written word, and starting to***link spelling with sound***. There are 29 fruits featured in the game: green apple; red apple; banana; cherry; date; fig; gooseberries; grapefruit; green grapes; red grapes; honeydew melon; kiwi; lemon; lime; mango; nectarine; olive; orange; papaya; peach; pear; pineapple; pumpkin; raspberry; redcurrants; rhubarb; starfruit; strawberry; watermelon. All the fruits may not be in my longer-term learning plan, but the learning objective moves beyond simply learning individual units of vocabulary - the images help students***infer meaning from context***, supported by the visual prompts and clues - this in turn supports them in developing their French language skills in the longer and more complex sentences. There is implicit input on grammatical concepts such as adjectival agreement, gender, definite, indefinite and partitive articles and position of adjectives, either preceding or proceeding the particular noun. This is a very successful way of really getting the most of what looks like a straightforward game for consolidating the target vocabulary - it is actually so much more! The question card template provides an additional learning activity, with students applying their developing French language knowledge creatively and practically, as they make game cards for the class - this is a really popular activity with my students. We use the set not only when we’re introducing and practicing French fruits, but also for developing French language skills and awareness in general. Students are able to familiarize themselves with how French words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. I don’t actually introduce 25 fruits at once, but in my classroom decor, I generally have additional language to maximize students’ exposure to related vocabulary. The fruits are: green apples : red apple : bananas : cherries : dates : fig : green grapes : red grapes : kiwi : lemon : mango : nectarine : olives : oranges : papaya : peach : pear : pineapple : pumpkin : raspberry : redcurrants : rhubarb : starfruit : strawberries : watermelon The flashcards / posters are 8.5 x 11 (A4) portrait size. There are two backgrounds to choose from - French flag or plain without frame to keep prep costs to a minimum. I always print on card stock and / or laminate my flashcards / posters, as they display much more effectively, and remain in excellent condition for years. These Spanish speaking practice cards are perfect for developing speaking skills - there are 100 question and answer cards and a reference book focusing on beginning and building conversation. They’re also great for multi-skill language learning - they give students structured talk opportunities and will also get them listening, reading and writing. They’re ideal for independent learning, and perfect for pair and small-group work. The cards feature language and structures that my students generally meet in the advanced beginner Spanish of their Spanish programme, including a range of tenses. The reference book includes all the questions and answers written out in Spanish. It’s an essential learning support resources for my students, who use it as a general writing frame to guide and inform their own creative writing. It’s really useful for mini-translation, whole-group pronunciation and reading-out loud practice too. We use the notes and next steps template to reflect on learning, what we might reasonably do to progress learning, and to inform and support whole-group discussion about learning in general. The question and answer writing card templates give students a great opportunity to apply Spanish practically and creatively, as they put together both questions and answers for each other. This is a great team activity too, and really popular with my students. The cards are really versatile, and work well in lots of different learning contexts, such as***independent learning time, home learning, revision and exam prep, and sub lessons***. There are also lots of other games and activities students can play - I’ve described how to play several you can start with that have been really successful with my learners.
